Langford bylaw department expanding to meet increased caseload

Another full-time bylaw officer expected to be hired for City

The City of Langford could have a new bylaw officer on its payroll by the end of the year.

At the request of the protective services committee, council approved in principle the community safety and municipal bylaw enforcement department’s five-year financial plan, for consideration in the 2017 budget. The plan outlines the need for another full-time bylaw officer due to an increase in bylaw-related calls.

The department’s caseload has more than doubled from about 1,000 files a year in 2013 to 2,600 in 2015 and 2016.

With the exception of seasonal auxiliary officers hired to patrol parks and trails in the summer, the City only employs two full time officers. The last time the City added a full-time officer was in 2011, when the population was roughly 26,000. Langford now has approximately 40,000 residents.
