A 30-year-old Langford man has died from injuries he received in a car crash in Esquimalt on Sunday, making his the first traffic-related death of 2012 in Victoria and Esquimalt.
Victoria police and Esquimalt firefighters raced to the scene of the horrific wreck in the 800-block of Rockheights Ave. in Esquimalt on Sunday around 2:30 a.m.
The driver crashed his Honda Prelude into a parked car and a retaining wall.
“The force of the collision was so extreme “that the majority of the car was destroyed,” Victoria police spokesperson Const. Mike Russell said.
“The investigation has been ongoing since the collision and VicPD has learned that the driver’s blood-alcohol level was over three times the legal limit,” Russell said. “Speed was also believed be a contributing factor.”
The last traffic-related death happened Nov. 28, 2011, when a 50-year-old male cyclist and a dump truck collided on Burnside Road West and Harriet Road. That investigation has not yet concluded.
There were two traffic fatalities in Victoria and Esquimalt in 2011.
