A Grade 7 student with a propensity for art has earned herself a $1,000 scholarship, while other aspiring young artists are being encouraged to apply for the next round.
Neighbourhood Art Studios announced that Latimer Elementary student Chloe Darrah was the winner of the first of two annual art scholarships being given out this year by the Langley centre.
It’s part of their bi-annual Pay-it-Back Program, explained studio founder Robert Barrett.
“Our studios have been instrumental in teaching art in the Langley area for the past 24 years. We have enjoyed success and wanted a way to repay back to our community,†Barrett said.
“Young budding artists are being left out because public school art programs suffered cutbacks for various reasons, so children who have artistic talent have not had the chance to learn at a higher level,†he elaborated.
Recognizing the need, a few years back Barrett started handing out two scholarships a year to his art studio, and he insists that tradition is continuing in 2015.
The program is open to “promising†young Langley and Surrey-area students between the ages of 12 and 16 years old.
Applicants must submit their portfolios, a letter describing why they want to attend art classes at the studio, and confirmation of good school grades.
The $1,000 scholarship entitles the winner to 48 art classes and all the art supplies needed at Neighbourhood Art Studios.
Scholarship seekers are encouraged to call the studio at 604-455-0344 for an application.
