Merv Hunter passed away suddenly at his place of residence early last week. Merv was well known to many Langley residents as an active sports enthusiast, local businessman, retired fire chief and former city councillor.
He moved to Langley in the early 1950s and became well known on the Fraser Valley baseball circuit as a pitcher for the Langley baseball teams.
He started a business, Hunter’s Sheet Metal, and was still fabricating projects up until he moved from his home last spring. He enjoyed a 67-year career doing something he loved.
Merv joined the Langley City, Zone 1 fire department as a volunteer and rose to the rank of fire chief, a position he held from 1966- 1972.
Merv was well respected on the department and always stressed safety to the new recruits.
He was elected to Langley City Council in the early 1970s and served until 1990, during some very formative years in the City’s history.
Former councillors remember him as a “common sense, down-to-earth politician.”
Neighbours and friends recall him as “someone you could count on,” “always ready with a smile and a story.”
He was an active curler, fisherman, golfer and a former president of the Langley Little League. He never shied away from teaching someone how to cast a line, prime a fire pump or throw a curve ball.
Merv was a teacher and a mentor to many in the community.
Predeceased by his son, Gordon, Merv is survived by his wife of 62 years, Margaret, his son Terry (Barb), Grandson Steve (Sarah), granddaughter Leanne, three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
His Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Oct.10, at 2 p.m. at Harrison Pointe.
