The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) will be hosting the 2016 East and West Kootenay Boundary Local Government Management Association (LGMA) Joint Chapter Conference at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort between April 13th and 15th.
Up to 80 senior staff (chief administrative officers, chief financial officers, corporate officers and human resource specialists) from over 20 municipalities and the Regional Districts of Central Kootenay, East Kootenay and Kootenay Boundary will be participating in the Joint Chapter Conference to focus on career development.
This year’s theme will be focused on providing participants with education that has a special emphasis for senior local government managers.
“With the conference, we’ve got two key themes: Leadership and Human Resources,” said Debbie Renaud, RDEK deputy chief financial officer. “We’re providing the senior LGMA managers an opportunity to take part in the training sessions, have an opportunity to see the area and do some networking.”
The Joint Chapter Conference will begin with registration for participants between 4 and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13th while sponsors for the event will be tabling all afternoon. At 7 p.m., the delegates will be invited to attend a wine and dessert reception to meet and greet one another.
“We’ve got some great keynote speakers coming in for this,” said Renaud. “There are some great topics coming up.”
On Thursday, April 14th, participants will begin attending workshops at 8:15 a.m. to learn about legal updates that affect local government. Keynote speaker Tracey Lee Lorenson will deliver a presentation entitled “Developing Leaders From Within.”
Lorenson will be pulling information from her 25-year background as a lawyer, executive manager and advisor to address issues in the private, public and non-profit sectors from management, elected officials and board members.
In addition, there will be a legal update regarding medical marijuana, which has become a popular topic for many local governments. The presentation will be geared toward answering questions about the new legislation.
On Friday, April 15th, participants at the conference will be learning about retention and recruitment strategies; performance management; and chapter meetings.
In addition, keynote speaker David Irvine will be presenting “Building High Performance Cultures that Attract, Retain and Unleash Greatness” to help motivate and inspire senior staff. He will be proposing creative solutions for tackling tough problems that show up within business leadership in today’s competitive job market as well as showcasing practical perspectives and strategies.
