Chilliwack students who are learning at home will be able to continue doing so until spring break.
The decision was made by the school district following a survey sent out to families participating in the Learn at Home Transition Support Program.
The results, gathered from 442 responses, showed an “overwhelming number of parents preferring to continue learn from home – at least until COVID numbers in the community decrease or the province can provide a vaccine,” a letter from the district states.
At a Nov. 24 board meeting, senior staff reported that 664 students were a part of Learn at Home from Kindergarten to Grade 8, while 8,604 students are learning in schools.

The Learn at Home program was created as a temporary support for students not attending school in class, but the focus was on transitioning back to a classroom by January. The budget was created around that goal, as well.
“The district has made the decision to continue the program until the budgeted funds are depleted,” the letter explained. “This approach will allow the district to continue the program until spring break (March 12, 2021).”
Following spring break, they say, students who are still unable to return to face-to-face instruction will be supported by their home school.
