The Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex will partner with the Cariboo Chilcotin Aboriginal Training Employment Centre to train aboriginal youth as lifeguards.
The initiative begins in April; young adults will be screened by aquatic centre staff to determine their swimming skills. Eight to 10 students will be chosen to begin the program to complete Red Cross Standard First Aid and the LifeSaving Society’s Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross and National Lifeguard Service courses.
Upon completion, the youth will be qualified for lifeguard positions around the province.
“This is the first time an initiative like this has occurred and I am thrilled to see it happening at Sam Ketcham Pool,” says Mayor Kerry Cook.
Interested students are asked to contact Deidri or Lucy at the CCATEC.
