Chilliwack Fire Department’s fire prevention officer, Lt. Lisa Axelson, has won a provincial award in the field of public safety education.
“I am here today to celebrate an outstanding achievement made by one of our valued Fire Department team members,” said Chilliwack Fire Chief Ian Josephson, making the announcement at the Sept. 21 council meeting at City Hall.
Axelson was named ‘Public Educator of the Year’ for 2021 by the Fire Prevention Officers’ Association of B.C.
She was formally recognized for her “outstanding contributions and achievements” in public, fire, and life safety education, and for her “unwavering commitment to make Chilliwack a safer place for us to live, work and play,” Josephson told mayor and council.
“If you ever met Lisa you have no doubt been uplifted by her amazing, positive energy, and the enthusiasm she demonstrates in everything she does,” Josephson said.
“She’s an expert teacher who easily connects with students of all ages. She is also a creative problem-solver who continues to impress us with her constant growth, and evolving expertise within her field.”
The fire chief described Axelson as “a leader” in the field of public safety, and an “outstanding ambassador” the both the local fire department and the B.C. fire service.
“I deeply respect, value and appreciate her dedication to our department, and the city,” Josephson said.
Mayor Ken Popove presented the ‘Public Educator of the Year’ award to Axelson in council chambers.
“I just want to say thank you,” Axelson said, adding she’s had the honour to serve City of Chilliwack for almost 20 years, and is set to retire next year. “So this is just lovely.”
