Oak Bay high school students gain more support this year thanks to the increase in two local scholarship endowments, allowing for larger annual scholarship payments.
The Oak Bay Rotary Scholarship and the Sno’uyutth Legacy Scholarship both now offer $1,500 gifts, up from the $1,000 offered in past years.
The scholarship committee works with Oak Bay High School teacher, Scott Alexander, to collect applications and pick winners for the annual scholarships.
This year the committee is inviting Joseph Blake, Joe Coughlin, the Community Association of Oak Bay, Oak Bay High School Alumni Association, Oak Bay News, and Scotiabank Oak Bay to be a part of the selection process for the 2018 Sno’uyutth Legacy Scholarship winner.
Sno’uyutth, which means “spreading good energy”.

In spring 2014, CAOB commissioned Songhees master carver Butch Dick to design a pole to adorn the new Oak Bay High. School District No. 61 agreed to the gift, and to provide ongoing maintenance. The Rotary Club of Oak Bay originally helped issuing tax receipts but wound up heavily involved in fundraising for the project that saw the community raise more than $88,500.
The spreading of good energy continued as the Rotary Club of Oak Bay Foundation now maintains and issues the Sno’uyutth Legacy Scholarship.
The Oak Bay Rotary Foundation scholarships have grown from $48,838 last year to $61,942. The Oak Bay Rotary Scholarship is at $36,762 and the Sno’uyutth Legacy Scholarship is at $25,180.
