Six local people will be recognized with a Diamond Jubilee Medal at a ceremony in Cranbrook on Thursday, August 30.

The commemorative medal marks the 2012 celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne.

Sixty thousand Canadians will be chosen to receive the award this year, a tangible way for Canada to honour the queen and, at the same time, honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians.

Locally, medal ceremonies are being held in Fernie, Invermere and Cranbrook.

Five Cranbrook residents and one Kimberley resident have been chosen to receive the Diamond Jubilee Medal. It will be awarded by Kootenay Columbia MP David Wilks – but the names of those honoured are a closely guarded secret until the ceremony.

The recipients are nominated by peers, and those chosen have received the most nominations.
