Princeton town hall has received several inquires recently from people interested in setting up pot shops to serve local residents.
However the municipality is not ready to roll out its plans for the legal sale of marijuana products just yet.
“We’ve had some interest for sure and we’ve kind of put them on hold because we are developing our policies and procedures,” said acting CAO Lyle Thomas.
“We’ve had five or six inquiries. I guess for a small town that’s pretty significant.”
The town held a public forum on legalization – which came into effect in October – last fall, and the overwhelming majority of those attending supported at least one retail location in Princeton.
While these establishments will be ultimately licensed by the province, municipalities have the ability to block applications.
“Everyone is just kind of reviewing it right now,” said Thomas. “All of that is under review – the number of stores, the locations of stores, what that means for zoning and how it would be governed.”
Staff is presently examining the models being developed by other communities, hoping to draw from their best practices, he added.
Thomas said the matter will likely come before council this spring.
“We will unveil something to council and let them review it and give us direction.”
