Maintenance work sees Sunday morning ferry sailing from Nanaimo cancelled

B.C. Ferries says Queen of Cowichan's scheduled 6:15 a.m. sailing cancelled

  • Jan. 23, 2020 12:00 a.m.

A ferry sailing destined for Horseshoe Bay on Sunday morning will not be departing as originally scheduled in order to allow crews to perform maintenance work, says B.C. Ferries.

According to a press release, the Queen of Cowichan’s 6:15 a.m. sailing from Departure Bay has been cancelled, as well as the 8:25 a.m. sailing from Horseshoe Bay. The vessel requires additional overnight maintenance that cannot be completed in the regularly scheduled night shift maintenance cycle, it said.

The Queen of Cowichan will resume service with its 10:40 a.m. sailing, B.C. Ferries said.

The other ferry on the Horseshoe Bay-Departure Bay route will be operating as usual, and is scheduled to depart Horseshoe Bay at 6:15 a.m. and leave Departure Bay at 8:25 a.m.

B.C. Ferries also apologized for the inconvenience the cancellation will cause.

“We need to replace a cylinder head on one of the vessel’s main engines,” said Deborah Marshall, B.C. Ferries spokesperson, in an e-mail. “We need more time to complete the work than the usual overnight hours. Early Sunday morning tends to be one of the quietest times for ferry travel, so that’s when we’ve scheduled the work.”
