New year, new rule at all Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) Diversion and Disposal Facilities.
As of Jan. 1, the facilities will accept major appliances free of charge as a result of a new partnership with the Major Appliance Recycling Roundtable (MARR) stewardship agency.

The RDNO will decommission the major appliances on site, and the scrap metal will be recycled.
“The agreement helps twofold — by signing on to the MARR program and removing the fee for dropping off major appliances, we will continue to divert major appliances from the landfill in a more affordable way for residents,” said RDNO board chairperson Kevin Acton. “We hope the program will also deter people from illegally dumping their appliances since it is now free and easy to dispose of them responsibly.”
The board approved the agreement at the Wednesday, Dec. 12 regular meeting.
A number of other changes to the Municipal Solid Waste Management Bylaw were approved, and can be viewed on the RDNO website.
