Volunteer teams from Terrace are being invited to join a fun competition, building towers with food donations in a brand new Riverboat Days event called CANstruction.
Anyone interested can gather a team of four and start collecting non-perishable food donations for the competition, which will take place during the Street Fair Medley Aug. 12.
On that Saturday, teams will face off in a battle to build the best structure using the canned food as building blocks.
Spectators will cheer the teams and vote in a winner for the most unique structure.
After prizes are given out, all the food will be donated to the Terrace Churches Food Bank and the Ksan Society.
The new CANstruction event is driven by the recently-formed Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC) at Volunteer Terrace, said program coordinator Jill Stephens.
The idea came from YVC leaders based in Kansas City, who said CANstruction has been done elsewhere in the country and been embraced with eager enthusiasm.
But the goal of helping the homeless was birthed by youth themselves — a group of ten who currently make of the Terrace youth corps.
“We first asked them what issues they see in Terrace,” explained Stephens.
“And the first thing that they brought up was homeless outreach.”
Ideas sparked from there, and when youth heard about CANstruction, they jumped on it.
This is the first time such an event has been held in Terrace, and will be a new component of the Riverboat Days’ Street Fair Medley on the 4600 Block of Lakelse Ave.
Teams will build between 3 – 6:30 p.m. and displays and voting will be 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
