A MAN tasered by police after he cut himself with a knife and threatened to kill himself was sentenced in court last week.
Kevin Neasloss entered into a peace bond on a charge of assault, which means he agreed that the person has reason to fear him without agreeing to what happened, explained prosecutor Bill Funnell.
Neasloss also agreed that for one year he will abide by conditions placed on him by the court.
If he breaches the conditions, the court can go after him to pay a $300 fine.
A peace bond is not a criminal conviction, added Funnell.
On Sept. 20, 2009, police used a Taser to subdue Neasloss, who had cut himself on the arms with a knife and threatened to use the weapon on his throat, reported police at that time.
“The male began yelling towards the police that there was no way that he was going to be taken alive,” a police press release indicated at that time.
“He made it clear he would not be going to jail or the hospital and that he was either going to kill himself or have the police kill him.”
Police said that the man continued to cut himself as they tried to speak with him.
“Two negotiating officers distracted the male while another officer was able to position himself to successfully deploy the Taser into the suicidal male. Two officers proceeded to pin the male to the ground, the weapon was pried out of his hands and he was detained under the authority of the Mental Health Act,” the release said.
The man went to the Mills Memorial Hospital psychiatric unit, said police.
Another charge of assault and a charge of being unlawfully in dwelling house were stayed by the court.
