Man arrested in Abbotsford after four-hour standoff

A standoff that lasted for about four hours last night resulted in the arrest of a 38-year-old man on Saturday morning in Abbotsford.

The incident began at about 8 p.m. Friday, when the Abbotsford Police Department attempted to execute a drug search warrant at a home in the 34000 block of Gladys Avenue, near the Salvation Army.

A man in the home refused police commands to exit the residence. The emergency response team, with the assistance of a K-9 unit, entered the home at about midnight and found the man hiding.

He was taken into custody without further incident and was arrested on an outstanding warrant. As well, police will be recommending a charge of obstruction in relation to the standoff, said Const. Paul Walker.

The search of the home ended just before noon today.

It is not known at this time whether any drugs, or other items, were found in the home. Walker said new information will be released as it becomes available.

The man’s name cannot be released until he is formally charged.
