Man charged with arson after weekend house fire in Surrey

No one injured in blaze near 114 Avenue and 142 Street Saturday.

A man has been charged with arson and uttering threats in connection with a fire at a Surrey home early Saturday morning.

Surrey RCMP say they received a report from the Surrey Fire Department at about 1:10 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 10) of a house fire in the 11400 block of 142 Street.

When they arrived, the home was fully engulfed, but the occupants were located outside on the street, uninjured. People in nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution.

Timothy Berg, 54, was arrested a short distance away from the fire and taken into custody.

Police believe the fire was targeted.

“He (the suspect) knew the people who were in the house,” said Cpl. Scotty Schumann.

A witness told CBC a resident of the home received a threatening phone call before the house began filling with smoke. Another neighbour said she heard someone cursing “what the f— are you doing?” as the blaze erupted.

Anyone who has not already spoken to police and may have information about the fire is asked to contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or www.solvecrime.ca
