Man dies in Maple Ridge townhouse fire

Maple Ridge fire department is still investigating what started a fire in a townhouse on 207A Street

A man was found dead Thursday night after fire ravaged a townhouse in Maple Ridge.

The blaze started in a unit at 12075 207A Street around 11 p.m. with witnesses reporting flames visible from several kilometres away.

By the time firetrucks arrived, the townhouse was engulfed in flames.

Firefighters found the man while conducting a search on the second floor of the townhouse.

The B.C. Coroner’s office was alerted.

“At this time we do not know the positive identity of the individual, and the origin of the fire has also not been determined,” said Inspector Dan Splinter on Friday, while fire investigators remained on scene.

“Ridge Meadows RCMP are working with the Maple Ridge Fire Department and B.C. Coroner’s office on this ongoing investigation.”

A neighbour said the same unit was damaged in a fire a few years ago.
