A West Kelowna man injured in a workplace explosion is currently in stable condition, but remains unconscious so doctors can address a series of severe injuries he incurred.

A friend of the 50-year-old, who is believed to have been injured while cutting into a  tank with acetone at Dead Metal Recycling on Auburn Road Monday, said he’s in a medically induced coma. When it’s safe to do so, doctors will wake him to assess the damage that witnesses say was primarily to his face and head.

The man, who’s name is being held back, was said to be “kind hearted” and employed casually to do any number of odd jobs at several industrial businesses in the area.

He always attended those jobs with his dog, in tow. The German Shepherd was on scene at the accident, and could employees at neighbouring businesses calmed him as paramedics treated his owner.

WorkSafe BC is currently investigating.
