Man missing after a swim in the Fraser River

Male went under water while attempting to swim around SkyTrain bridge pillar.

A Burnaby man remains missing after he attempted a swim in the Fraser River near Surrey early Saturday morning.

The man was part of a group of males on the beach at 11931 Old Yale Rd. June 4. The group had lit a bonfire and were drinking before deciding to jump into the river and try to swim around a SkyTrain bridge pillar.

The missing male was seen going under the water and did not resurface. Surrey RCMP were called at approximately 2:50 a.m. and began a coordinated water search with the assistance of Search and Rescue and the Coast Guard. The search was called off after several hours.

Police do not suspect foul play and have not released the name of the male pending notification of his family.
