MARS is looking for a few good students.
The Merville-based Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society is currently looking for students to take part in their annual work experience student program. Typically, the program gets many international students, but due to COVID-19, their applications are down significantly, explained Gylaine Andersen, manager of wildlife rehabilitation for the organization.
She’s hoping to put the word out for any local students who have an interest in animals and are willing to work hard to apply.
“We can take up to seven students at a time – we usually do need more in the summer as that’s generally our busy time (of the year). We do have lots going on right now too.”
Andersen explained the positions require a full-time commitment and the length of the work experience program can vary from two weeks up to several months.
Work experience volunteers are accepted year-round and are unpaid positions filled on a rotating basis.
Mentorship and education are at the core of MARS’ guiding principles, and Andersen said students can expect to learn everything the organization does on a daily basis including rehabilitation. Students usually begin with basic animal responsibilities such as feeding and cleaning and can participate in rescues and releases, treatment administration, building projects, grounds maintenance and community outreach.
Those interested have to be at least 18 years old, and accommodation can be provided if needed. Andersen recommends students have an interest in animals and are willing to work hard. The internship is a great bridge to those considering careers as a veterinarian, vet tech or any animal-related career, she added.
