Firefighters are in overhaul stage after a massive barn fire at 6:30 this morning at Tolmie and No. 2 roads in Abbotsford.

Massive fire destroys local barn

Despite extensive damage almost all of the cattle inside were saved

Fire has destroyed a number of farm buildings on a property at the corner of No. 2 Road and Tolmie in east Abbotsford Sunday.

The fire, which was reported around 6:30 a.m., brought a significant response from Abbotsford Fire Rescue Services.

Fire Rescue indicated that the majority of cattle inside were able to be saved, with neighbours assisting with corralling the livestock and moving them to other area farms.

Assistant chief Ron Hull said on the scene that it was a “total loss” for the barn, but it looked like they got the cattle out.

Hull said it also sparked a couple of grass fires from embers in the area.

“Being fairly dry, we’re going to get a few of those.”

Deputy fire chief Jeff Adams said Monday that investigators were still working to determine a cause of the fire, but it will take some time to pinpoint.

He said the response required about 12 career firefighters and 27 auxiliary.

“I know the guys worked very hard, and with the heat, it would be very taxing on them.”

The Salvation Army emergency vehicle and team were on site at the fire, feeding and hydrating the firefighters.
