Art Party Nakusp took place at the Old Fire Hall on Apr. 30.
The party came about because there doesn’t seem to be many spaces in the area for people to showcase their work.
Kate Tupper was one of the organizers for the event.
“I’ve travelled to lots of places and have seen different activities that other towns are having,” she said. “I wanted Nakusp to have that too.”
“A lot of Castlegar events are funded by Columbia Basin Trust, so they have certain obligations to uphold, it’s a lot more formal,” Castlegar resident Cheyanna Shypitka said. “With this, there’s a lot more camaraderie and friendliness that’s not present at events that I’ve been to recently.”
The event was a first for Nakusp.
Outdoor Education students took on the Dragons and won
Students in the Outdoor Education Program had the chance to take part in the regional Junior Dragons Den competition, held in Trail on May 7, winning first place for their fire starter kits, and third place for their fishing flashers.
Competitors have two minutes to present their invention, and then have two minutes to answer questions from the Dragons.
“I was a bit nervous, and kind of excited, and it goes by really fast when you’re on stage,” said Abby Boswell. “By the time the question period was over, you were surprised by how fast the time went by.”
Along with taking first and third place, the students also won $2,000 in prize money. The money will be used to help buy a vinyl cutter and a wax melting machine.
For Dorian Boswell and the students, winning Junior Dragons Den wasn’t about the money, it was something more.
“It means they’re serious about what they’re doing,” he said. “They’re serious enough that they would stand on a stage and defend their business plan in front of an audience. It’s pretty impressive.”
Burton welcomes
new business; cidery hosts grand opening
Despite the less than favourable weather, Residents of Nakusp and surrounding areas made it to Burton on May 21 to help Barbara and Alan Ross celebrate the grand opening of the Burton City Cidery.
“Burton was Burton City a long time ago, so we named it following the history of the location,” said Alan Ross.
From May and June, the cidery will be open Saturday and Sunday from 11-4 p.m., and then July and August it will be open Friday to Monday from 11-4 p.m.
The Ross’ feel the timing of the opening was just right.
“I think the community was ready for a new business to start up and be open to welcome the new visitors,” said Alan. “We’ve lost a few businesses over the last ten years, and it’s time to reverse the flow.”
