Mayoral candidate drops from race in Princeton

One of the four candidates running for mayor of Princeton has dropped from the race citing health concerns.

One of the four candidates running for mayor of Princeton has dropped from the race citing health concerns.

Jim Manion announced on social media Friday that he is withdrawing his name from the ballot, with special permission from the Chief Elections Officer.

“It’s very disappointing,” said Manion in a subsequent interview with The Spotlight. “It’s a very emotional thing, at this time of my life. I was going to make a good run at it and it is something left that is unfinished.”

Manion announced his candidacy previous to the official nomination period and said his health issues arose suddenly.

Results of a routine medical procedure led his doctor to perform additional tests.

“There’s obviously something else happening but the unfortunate thing is I can not get the results back until the end of the campaign,” he said.

“It was serious,” he said, adding that it’s possible if elected, he would be unable to fulfill his duties.

“The decision at that time was to be responsible and henceforth that is what I’ve done.”

Manion said he wanted to thank the people who offered him support and encouragement.

His campaign team voted to throw its support behind Spencer Coyne for the mayor’s chair.

“That is what my campaign decided on and they have worked very hard for me.”

Coyne, Leona Guerster and incumbent Frank Armitage continue with a three-way race for the job.
