The Megan Dalziel G.P. Vanier Secondary Memorial Bursary Committee is very pleased to announce that Chanelle Meeres has been selected as the 2020-21 recipient.
The bursary was established to honour Dalziel, who excelled in academics and athletics at Vanier and went on to lead the UVIC women’s basketball to two national championships whilst displaying determination, humility and an inclusive caring demeanour, Dalziel went on to complete her education degree and became a successful secondary school teacher before leaving too soon from cancer.
The criteria for Dalziel’s bursary includes: has shown excellence in athletics and academics; is pursuing post-secondary education and preference given to students reflecting the personal attributes shown by Dalziel.
Meeres is planning to pursue a nursing bachelor of science degree at either UVIC, V.I.U. or the University of Alberta.
Meers was described by one of her teachers as, “…the perfect example of hard work, persistence and caring.” Her athletic success in curling, a self-described major part of her life, is impressive. She qualified for the 2018 U 18 Provincials winning gold at the B.C. Winter Games and represented B.C. at the Canada Winter Games.
Through curling, she has given back to her community volunteering with the Jr. ‘Little Rockers’ program, the youngest and newest group of curlers. As well, she has volunteered at her old elementary school assisting students with ‘Brain breaks,’ and, with her sister, for several years fundraised for the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
With the cost of tuition and accommodation so prohibitive, The Megan Dalziel Memorial Bursary Committee’s hope is that this bursary will help worthy recipients, like Meeres, defray some of the high costs associated with pursuing post-secondary education. And, the hope of the committee is that the bursary will continue to be a perpetual one for a deserving Vanier secondary female student each year.
Donations to the bursary, of any amount, are most welcome and can be sent to: Megan Dalziel Memorial Bursary c/o S.D. 71, 607 Cumberland Road, Courtenay, B.C., V9N7G5. (Attn. Cathie Collins)
