The Canadian Forces were brought in Saturday, Aug. 17 to remove what turned out to be an inert military practice round that was no longer explosive, which was discovered in Quesnel’s industrial park at Two Mile Flat.
Two police cars were parked at the entrance to the city’s mills Friday afternoon, and yellow police tape cordoned off a large area near Brownmiller Road, off Highway 97 North.
Cpl. Madonna Saunderson, the District Advisory NCO (Media Relations) for the North District RCMP, confirmed that on Friday, Aug. 16, Quesnel RCMP received a report from a maintenance worker who, while mowing the grass, found what he believed to be an explosive device.
“The explosive device appeared to be a military artillery ordinance,” Saunderson said in an email.
Saunderson says the Canadian Forces were contacted, and police restricted access to the area until the military’s explosive ordnance disposal unit could attend the scene.
“Canadian Forces arrived and advised the projectile was an inert practice round that had been fired,” she said. “The round, which was no longer explosive, was removed by the Canadian Forces.”
Canadian Forces members attended the scene Saturday, Aug. 17, and by Sunday, Aug. 18, the police tape had been removed.
