Veins of coal buried deep underground lured many residents to Lantzville to work in the mines.
Lantzville pays homage to its mining history Sept. 8 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. during its annual Minetown Day celebration.
The event features a pancake breakfast, a parade, hay rides, a street market with local artisans, games and live entertainment. The annual Lantzville’s Got Talent showcase is back again this year, and people enjoy the performances of local artists.
“The talent contest is quite popular,” said Lantzville Coun. Denise Haime, who also serves on the Minetown Day committee.
Haime said one of the best things about Minetown Days is it’s free. Admission, the rides and activities and the entertainment are all free. There is a fee for the pancake breakfast and food vendors.
“You don’t have to come with a load of cash,” she said. “It really is a family thing. The nicest thing for me is the opportunities for families and community residents to get together.”
Portions of Lantzville Road between Ware and Lantzville School roads will be closed from about 9:45-11 a.m. for the parade. Traffic controllers will be available to redirect vehicles to alternate routes.
The Minetown Day committee is still seeking volunteers to fill a variety of positions. People interested in volunteering can contact Melanie Norcutt at melanie_norcutt@hotmail.com.
