The annual Sproat Lake Regatta kicked off with a show n’ shine that features everything from F1 racing boats right down to “sea fleas” that are right out of a 1950s Popular Mechanic magazine issue.
The event continues on Margaret Street in front of the Blue Marlin Inn until 8 p.m. today (July 15, 2016).
The Miss British Columbia hydroplane dragster, once the world’s fastest boat and one that used to compete at the regatta decades ago, will be on display all weekend.
Some of the boats, like Davidson’s “The Animal” modified drag boat, will race demos during the regatta at Sproat Lake Saturday, July 16 and Sunday, July 17. Mike McLellan, Mike Nass and Maskall will be in the water with their F1 tunnel boats, which top out at 140 miles per hour.
Admission to watch the regatta is free. The pits will be set up at Sproat Lake Provincial Park and there are plenty of waterfront spots to catch the action.
