A proposed development on Nelson Street in the Silverdale area will be heading to a public hearing.
On Monday night, council voted to grant first and second reading to a community plan amendment and rezoning applications to subdivide the properties at 8279, 8289, 8387 and 8455 Nelson Street, and Parcel A, to allow 66 compact single-family lots and 160 townhouse units.
The five properties total 16.01 hectares (39.56 acres) in the Silverdale and the Israel Bench neighbourhood areas of Mission.
The application has been made by Polygon Homes Ltd. on behalf of Silverdale Hills GP Inc.
During Monday night’s meeting, several residents in the area asked council why the proposal appears to be being rushed through, as it was a late item on the agenda.
“We found out about this at about 3 o’clock, we got some phone calls” said one resident.
But Mayor Randy Hawes explained that nothing was being approved that evening and there is no real opportunity for public comment at that time in the process.
“First and second reading is how we can move it ahead so that we can get public comment. The public comment will come at a public hearing.”
A public hearing has been scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19. It will take place at the gymnasium in the Mission Leisure Centre, instead of city hall.
“We think that there will probably be quite a few people who want to come, and at least hear what’s happening and maybe speak. So we have a bigger venue,”said Hawes.
