Mission seniors targeted in ‘stranded motorist’ scam

At least two incidents reported to Mission RCMP this week

Police are warning the public about a resurgence in criminals preying on local seniors.

At least two Mission residents were taken advantage of earlier this week by thieves posing as stranded motorists.

All incidents have occurred in residential neighbourhoods, and the victim is typically approached when they are returning home. The suspect has approached the victim and said they’re having car trouble, and require water for their radiator.

The suspect often offers to help the victim carry their groceries or other items and wait at the entrance of the residence while the victim gets the requested water.

A rash of similar crimes were reported this past November, and arrests have been made. The latest local incident involved an 86-year-old woman.

It is believed that at least one male and one female suspect are involved in these thefts. Different descriptions have been provided for the suspect vehicle involved in each theft.

Police caution people to be vigilant for suspicious activity and strange persons hanging around their neighbourhood. Police also remind the public not to allow strangers into their homes and to keep their doors locked at all times.
