A Mission woman is trying to become the next Maxim Canada cover model and she needs the support of the community.
Meghan Hilton, a 2018 graduate of Mission Secondary School is one of several hundred young hopefuls who have qualified for the Maxim Canada Cover Girl Contest.
The contest gives models the opportunity to achieve their dream of being featured in the magazine and this year’s winner receive a featured spread and a cash prize of $10,000.
Hilton said she has always been outgoing. She loves musical theatre and played the part of Dorothy in Mission Secondary’s production of the Wiz, in 2016. It was at about the same time that she turned to modeling.
“I started taking it seriously when I was 16 after a modeling agent contacted me after she saw me in a singing contest,” said Hilton.
She began to work with photographers and earned some catalogue work.
“From there it has mostly just been meeting people, making connections and working with brands.”
She tried living in Vancouver for a few months, but decided to move back to Mission.
“I considered doing modeling full-time. I’d like to get into a situation where I can do it as a job, but realistically, the market in Vancouver is not what I’d like to do.”
She said she isn’t a “runway person” and prefers to be hands-on and creative.
“If anything I’d like to get to a point that I can be an advocate for other models that are going through the industry. I’ve had my hard times with it. I’ve had issues with ‘you need to lose weight, you need to do that,’ so I’ve got myself into a position where I choose who I work with.”
She would like to get to the point that she could go and work in the U.S.
“I’m not quite sure what I would do specifically, but I’m still kind of deciding. I’ve got my whole life to decide.”
She entered the Maxim contest on a whim, after seeing an ad for it.
“I saw it online and I wasn’t sure if it was real or not, because there are so many fake advertisements.”
However, it was real and after sending in some photos, she received confirmation that she had been chosen to compete.
Currently in the opening round of the contest, Hilton needs to earn enough fan votes to win her group. With 12 days to go she is sitting in second place.
If she garners enough votes to win, she moves on to the next round.
Hilton explained that people can visit the website and vote for her once a day for free.
“You do have to sign in to Facebook,” she said.
There is also an option to buy more votes with some of the proceeds going to charity.
According to the contest website “A minimum of 25% of the proceeds from the competition will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.”
