Mission’s 10th annual Cycling4Diversity Week has kicked off.
The event, which runs until May 22, is the brainchild of Coun. Ken Herar, who says the objective of bringing awareness to cultural divisions that exist across the province remains unchanged.
His team has visited over 150 schools in the 10 years they’ve been at it, and Herar said he wants to encourage youth and young adults to become “more proactive than reactive” to issues of race relations and social acceptance.
“My goal today is still the same and with more passion. As our communities grow and become more diverse, the key to keeping our community inclusive and together is raising awareness and discussion on this very topic,” Herar said in an email.
“I think it’s important to celebrate this 2021 milestone anniversary through Spinning4Diversity, due to Covid protocols.”
Spinning4Diversity is a virtual discussion that will take place every day from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. starting May 18, with Herar, and co-hosts Mike Bismeyer, Vik Gill and Meghan Hilton, along with other guests.
“After this week, C4D’s plan is going to continue spinning and create continued dialogue throughout the summer by virtual conversations and dialogue,” Herar said. “A key component to diversity messaging, if all of our differences are keeping us apart and if we’re not treated as equals, then I believe diversity is not working to its full potential.”
People wishing to join in the discussion can visit the following link, contact Herar by phone (604 615 2499), his assistant Pamela (604 621 8999), or email: cycling4diversity@gmail.com.
