More fire hydrants considered for BX

Fire service could ultimately be enhanced in Greater Vernon’s rural areas

Fire service could ultimately be enhanced in Greater Vernon’s rural areas.

Regional District of North Okanagan staff will prepare a report on the possible installation of fire hydrants within the BX-Swan Lake fire protection area.

“It has to make economic sense,” said director Bob Fleming of the major potential stumbling block.

Some neighbours have fire hydrants because of development decades ago, but many neighbourhoods in the BX-Swan Lake fire protection area are not served by hydrants.

Currently, the only mechanism for a neighbourhood to get hydrants is if property owners on a road are willing to foot the bill.

Fleming says he will be interested to read the outcome of the staff report.

`We don`t want it to cost too much but everyone would benefit from the hydrant service,`he said.

Fleming will be seeking input from the BX-Swan Lake Fire Department, which currently has to transport water into areas without hydrants when responding to a fire.
