The Columbia Shuswap Regional District is promoting a long list of new items that can be recycled for free at the Revelstoke Bottle Depot as of Oct. 1, 2011.
Many used electronic items (such as computers and stereos) can already be recycled for free at the Revelstoke Bottle Depot and similar facilities in other towns. New to the list are items including blenders, toasters, coffee makers, microwaves, clocks, bathroom scales, clothes irons, air purifiers, tabletop fans, hair dryers, vacuum cleaners, air fresheners and more. Check with the facility for the complete list.
Columbia Shuswap Regional District Waste Reduction Coordinator Carmen Fennell said this program is part of a provincial initiative to keep 120 million used or broken small appliances out of landfills.
“We know local residents are ready for a program like this,” Fennell said in a statement. “There’s been a demand for it and we’re happy to launch this industry led program.”
The goods are transported to a recycling facility in the Lower Mainland, separated into base components such as glass, plastic or metal, then recycled.
