Questions on Kimberley’s new automated garbage collection are steadily rolling in. One of the most frequently asked questions that wasn’t included in last Friday’s press release is what to do when cars are parked out front, with regards to the new front of house pickup.

The City’s Senior Manager of Operations Chris Mummery says that if vehicles are parking in appropriate designated parking areas, they shouldn’t be in the way of the automated garbage truck.
“The bins can be placed in front of, or between, the vehicles ensuring there is one metre clearance around the carts, and they are not in the traffic lane,” explained Mummery in an email to the Bulletin. “Additionally, carts should not be placed on sidewalks. They should be placed in front of the sidewalk.”
Mummery says that in general, the collection has moved to the front.
“There are some select areas that will remain with laneway pickup due to specific limitations with front of house pickup,” he said. “Notices are being left with the carts this week to help instruct residents in areas that are an exception to the front of street pick up.”

Another question that has been floating around is what will happen in the winter.
“In the winter, carts will need to be placed in front of the windrows and not on or in the snow banks,” Mummery said.
He added that the new system will take some time to adjust to.
“It is a learning and adjustment process for the next few weeks with this new automated system roll out for both the City and the residents. The City appreciates everyone’s patience in working with us during this transition.”
