The family of a man gunned down last summer is appealing for witnesses who can bring his killer to justice.

Jatinder “Michael” Sandhu was fatally shot in the driveway of his friend’s home in the 14300-block of 90A Avenue at about 10:20 p.m. on July 23, 2016.

The friend was injured, but survived. Police said the men were unintended targets in the shooting.

His mother Kal Sandhu said Michael’s family, including, his dad and a younger brother and sister, is suffering deeply with the loss of the 28-year-old.

The Enver Creek Secondary grad had a full-time job at a bank and was on his way to earning his real estate licence.

He was affable and well-liked by his friends. His mother describes him as quiet, but with a dry wit.

And he was a giving person, she said.

“Oh my God, he was the nicest kid ever,” said Kal Sandhu. “He would give you anything and everything he had. He was a very nice kid.”

His best friend Tarnjot Randhawa said he will miss Michael greatly.

“Michael was a loving and caring individual. He never wished bad on anyone and always looked at life in a positive manner,” Randhawa said. “He was a positive influence on everyone in his life. And every time you saw him he would be smiling. He was a gentle-hearted soul and will be immensely missed.”

Neither of the two victims were part of the drug turf dispute still simmering in Surrey.

Mayor Linda Hepner said at the time she was mortified to hear someone not involved in the criminal lifestyle had been killed by gun violence.

“It was part of the worst nightmare conversations that I’ve had… that some innocent would be involved,” Hepner said. “I have the greatest of sympathy for the family suffering a loss.”

A suspect was seen fleeing the scene in a grey or silver Infiniti SUV (unknown year) and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is asking for public assistance in finding it.
