Drivers headed to Abbotsford International Airport along Mount Lehman Road will have twice the room to maneuver now that the road expansion project has been completed.

The project, which doubled the amount of lanes from two to four from Great Northern Avenue to the airport, opened on Monday, Nov. 25.

The additional two lanes will increase the “safety and efficiency for people who travel this route,” said a Ministry of Transportation press release.

The total cost of the project was $27.5 million, with the federal government contributing $8.4 million, the provincial government $17.1 million and $2 million from the City of Abbotsford.

The expansion also includes additional bike lanes and sidewalks, a dedicated southbound left-turn lane at the Mount Lehman and Simpson Road intersection, a new signal at the Mount Lehman and Marshall Road intersection and enhanced lighting.
