Kamloops – Cathy McLeod, Member of Parliament for Kamloops – Thompson – Cariboo, today said the Liberal Government should heed the RCMP’s warning on changes made to criminal background checks and the pardons system for those applying to work with vulnerable individuals.
According to the RCMP, there have been cases where people with disturbing records have been approved by the Liberal Government to work with children and the elderly. These findings were presented in a briefing note to Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale. The Minister has the final say when it comes to disclosing someone’s criminal record under vulnerable sector regulations.
“In 2016, the Liberals approved 38% of these requests. This means that the Minister potentially hid the past violations of 62% of offenders from potential employers, school administrators and others responsible for vulnerable groups,” stated McLeod.
“How could the safety of vulnerable Canadians, such as children and our elderly not be the top priority for Justin Trudeau?” questioned MP McLeod. “The Liberals continue to ignore the red flags and persist on tearing down protective measures.”
“Once again we have the RCMP working to ensure the integrity of the system and the Liberals putting people at risk,” concluded McLeod.
