OTTAWA, ON — Todd Doherty, Member of Parliament for Cariboo-Prince George, issued the following statement regarding the emergency situation in Williams Lake, British Columbia.
“Like many of my neighbours, I am shocked and appalled to hear of today’s emergency situation in Williams Lake following gun shots fired in a residential neighborhood. This morning’s lockdown is just another example of the prolonged and escalating gang violence situation within our community.
“Residents should never have to be afraid to walk their dog or send their child to school. They deserve the right to know that they are safe when they leave their houses, and should be able to experience all that our beautiful community has to offer without living in fear.
“Violence of this nature in our communities is unacceptable. Last month I met with the Minister of Public Safety to find a solution to combat gang violence associated with drug-trafficking and I expect the Liberal Government to take action on this file immediately.”
Williams Lake RCMP: shots fired on Western Avenue
On Monday April 25, 2016, just after 04:00 a.m. the Williams Lake RCMP received a report that shots had been fired at a residence in the 900 block of Western Ave in the City.
Officers attended the scene and determined that an unknown subject(s) had fired several shots at the residence.
This is believed to be a targeted incident as the residence was recently occupied by an individual who claimed to be a local gang member, but the residence is currently occupied by a family with no criminal connections. Fortunately no one was injured in this incident.
Shortly after officers arrived on scene, another shot was heard from an unknown direction which resulted in heightened vigilance by the officers.
As a precaution measure, the Williams Lake RCMP notified the local School District, University, and area residents of the situation and recommended that everyone stay away from the area until further notice.
Police have seized a firearm and currently have one person in custody connected to this incident. Although the residence in question is still being secured, the School District, Local University and residence have been notified that they can continue with their daily activities. We wish to thank the public for their patience and understanding during this volatile situation.
