Police are looking for two men believed to be responsible for multiple thefts of bicycles at Vancouver Island University.
According to Nanaimo RCMP, there have been five reported thefts of bikes at VIU’s Nanaimo campus over the past two weeks. In each instance the bikes were locked, but the suspects who were captured on VIU security camera footage riding away on two stolen bikes on Friday, used bolt cutters or other tools to snap open locks.
Several of the bikes stolen were registered on the 529 Garage app.
Both suspects are described as white and in their early 20s.
Anyone with information about the identity of either suspect is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at www.nanaimocrimestoppers.com, text 274637 or call 1-800-222-847.
Bicycles left unattended should always be secured with a lock that is not easily defeated, according to police. Registering a bike with the 529 Garage app will not prevent a bicycle from being stolen but will assist police agencies and the public with finding it.
