Mural proposals sought from Chilliwack artists to beautify the Vedder Bridge

Two locations have been tagged so the hope is that artwork will be a deterrent

Public art murals will be adding splashes of colour to the new Vedder Bridge.

A request for proposals (RFP) went out from City of Chilliwack with a closing date of April 5 seeking professional artist proposals to create two murals near the bridge.

“These surfaces have been getting tagged unfortunately, so we thought we could split the RFP into two sections,” said Coun. Sue Attrill, chair of the public art advisory committee.

The artwork will have a river or water theme, something that recognizes the history of the area, with one mural going on the north abutment wall, and the other the brick façade of the retaining wall.

“We’re hoping an artist, or a collaboration of artists, might be interested this project, and depending on what arrives in terms of submissions we will take care of both surfaces,” Attrill said. “It’s also an opportunity for artists to make some thing beautiful and appealing.”

The theory is that the taggers who often consider themselves artists will be more likely to respect a lovely work of art.

“The City of Chilliwack believes that public art helps increase the vibrancy and livability of the community, thereby fostering a sense of pride in public places,” according the notice on the city’s RFP.

Submissions are due before 3 p.m. on Friday April 5, 2019. For more details about the RFP call 604-793-2904.
