The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has identified the victim and suspect in the New Year’s Eve murder in Langley.

The victim has been confirmed as 40-year-old Cole Adam Manning of Cloverdale. Jason Terrence Brewer, 24, has been charged with second-degree murder.

“The victim and suspect are believed to be friends; however, IHIT investigators continue to explore the motive for this homicide. At this point we can say this is not gang-related,” said Sgt. Jennifer Pound, IHIT spokesperson.

Brewer appears in Surrey provincial court at 1:30 p.m. this afternoon (Wednesday).

Manning’s body was found in a basement suite in a residence in the 19800 block of 69 Avenue at about 7:30 a.m. on Monday.

Brewer was quickly identified as a suspect and was arrested at about 9:30 a.m. on 264 Street in Aldergrove, near the Greater Vancouver Zoo, by the Abbotsford Police and Langley RCMP.

IHIT has not released the cause of death.

Prior to this incident, Brewer was already going through the court system on another matter.

The provincial court database indicates that he is slated to go on trial in Surrey, starting Feb. 5, on two counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm and two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm for an incident on Nov. 15, 2009.

In July of this year, he was convicted of robbery and assault with a weapon. He was sentenced to one day in jail and 18 months’ probation.
