Spallumcheen’s newest park has a new name and sign.
McLeod Park is the official name given to the old playground that was dismantled in McLeod subdivision, and will be replaced with a new playground and landscaping project.
A sign had to be included at the park as part of the grant approval process used by the township to help pay for renovating the playground.
“It’s a nice new sign and it’s the same as our other signs,” said Mayor Janice Brown of the structure that will adorn the park.
The sign was created by Sunridge Designs, who have been used by the township in the past to produce and provide community signs.
Spall in for starling control
The township voted unanimously to a Regional District of North Okanagan resolution passed in January that the matter of starling control be referred to jurisdictions to fund for 2013.
Spallumcheen’s amount is $1,482, which is the same as 2012.
The City of Armstrong’s portion would be $1,093 but the city has yet to vote on the matter.
The B.C. Grapegrowers’ Association has requested $425,000 in continued funding to support its starling control program. Funding was provided through RDNO from 2009-12 but the establishment bylaw is no longer in effect.
“In the Okanagan, the starling control program saves orchardists more than $2 million in crops, so it’s huge,” said Coun. Christine Fraser.
Added Coun. Todd York: “As a pest species, starlings are brutal.”
Fees for services
Township council unanimously approved fees for services in 2013 to be paid to the Armstrong Spallumcheen Chamber of Commerce and Armstrong Spallumcheen Museum and Archive Society.
The museum group will receive $9,720 while the chamber gets $8,000.
