Recreation centres and pools in Nanaimo are scheduled to re-open in late summer after being closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Following orders from the B.C. Ministry of Health, the City of Nanaimo closed recreation facilities in March. The city re-opened sports courts and fields in June and at a meeting Monday, council approved re-opening plans for Beban Park social centre, Oliver Woods Community Centre, the recreation complex at Bowen Park and Nanaimo Aquatic Centre, according to a press release, although a date for Beban pool’s re-opening has not been established.
Nanaimo Aquatic Centre is set to re-open both its pool and gym facilities on Sept. 10, according to the press release, while Beban will begin accepting facility rentals Tuesday, Aug. 4 and open Sept. 9 for fall recreation programs.
Both Oliver Woods and Bowen Park will re-open Sept. 9 for rentals and recreation programs.
“Facilities will be operating with modified operating schedules and reduced rental and program offerings,” said the press release. “Participants will be required to pre-register and pay in advance for all sessions through [the city’s] online booking system at www.nanaimo.ca/recreation-parks/register-for-a-program.
Provincial, WorkSafe B.C. and B.C. Recreation and Parks Association safety protocols related to coronavirus will also be adhered to, the press release said.
