Three teachers in the Nanaimo Ladysmith school district have been named finalists for the inaugural Premier’s Awards for Excellence in Education.
According to a Office of the Premier of B.C. and the Ministry of Education press release, Emily Recalma, a Nanaimo District Secondary School teacher, and Verna Jones of Ladysmith Secondary School have been nominated in the Indigenous Education Award category, while Tanya Adelborg, Randerson Ridge Elementary School, is a finalist for the Extracurricular Leadership Award.
The awards recognize teachers “who go above and beyond to make life better” for students in the province, according to the press release, and the three were among 27 finalists in nine award categories.

Recalma, Adelborg and Jones have been invited to the awards ceremony, which takes place at Government House in Victoria on Oct. 5, World Teachers’ Day.
Winners will receive a $3,000 bursary for professional learning and $2,000 to their school for professional learning, the press release said.
