Nanaimo dry grad organizers seek more volunteers

NANAIMO – More than 200 volunteers are needed for the annual graduation event.

While the organizing committee for Nanaimo-Ladysmith Dry Grad is seeing an influx of volunteers, it still seeks more.

The alcohol-free graduation event for students in the Nanaimo school district is slated for June 26 at Beban Park and includes a variety of events, such as karaoke, scuba diving and kayak races. Food will be provided as well.

There were only 40 people signed up earlier in the month, but according to Dave Brown, dry grad chairman, that number has swelled to an estimated 100-plus volunteers.

Organizers are seeking 200 to 250 volunteers for site security, bag check-in, cleanup, entertainment booths and kitchen staff.

“Other than that, it’s just generalized volunteering and helping, wherever you’re needed at the time,” said Brown.

The event has been taking place for 26 years and is a good event for those about to get their diplomas, he said.
