Nanaimo projects impress judges at commercial building awards

Nanaimo buildings won multiple Vancouver Island Real Estate Board awards last week

Nanaimo building projects from 2018 brought home the honours from the 12th annual Vancouver Island Real Estate Board Commercial Building Awards.

The awards, which celebrate the best commercial, community and industrial building projects north of the Malahat, were hosted in Courtenay on Thursday.

The 2019 Awards of Excellence winners from Nanaimo are: Magnolia Apartments, multi-family townhome; Nuutsumuut Lelum, multi-family non market; Vancouver Island University Centre for Health and Science, institutional; Harewood Centennial Park covered multi-purpose court, community; and Quality Foods Harewood, retail. Legasea, a mixed-use condominium project in Departure Bay, was named Judges’ Choice best overall entry.

All projects entered in the competition for this year’s awards were completed in 2018 and judged by a team of independent judges who choose the winner of 10 categories: renovation, multi-family townhome, multi-family apartment, multi-family non market, institutional, civil, community, mixed use, industrial and retail.

Awards of merit were presented to Harbour View Autohaus, retail; Building Envelope Remediation Construction Service, renovation; Harbour City Flats, multi-family apartment. La-Z-Boy Furniture Gallery received an honourable mention.

Gold sponsors of the event were Re/Max Commercial, MNP LLP and Coastal Community Credit Union. Category sponsors were NAI Commercial, Yellow Sheet Review, Herold Engineering, Colliers International, Invest Comox Valley, CIBC, Business Development Bank of Canada and Berk’s Intertruck. Black Press was the media sponsor.
