Nanaimo RCMP have arrested one man and are working to track down two other suspects following a break-and-enter attempt that was interrupted by a property owner.
The incident happened at about 10 a.m. Sunday on a rural property in the 1200 block of Maughan Road, located in Cedar south of Nanaimo.
According to police, the property owner told officers he noticed the lock on the door to the barn had been broken off and minutes later he heard a vehicle horn sounding.
Two male suspects were seen running from his property and he managed to snap a picture of the female driver and vehicle licence plate before she drove away. Officers found bolt cutters near the barn.
Nanaimo RCMP Police Dog Services attended and tracked the two male suspects, but were unable to locate them. Evidence was found along the track believed to be associated to the suspects.
Investigators followed up on the vehicle information and found the registered owner driving the suspect vehicle in the vicinity of his home. The 36-year-old man, who is known to police, was arrested without incident on suspicion of being involved in the attempted break-and-enter and was later released from custody. He is expected to make his first appearance in provincial court in Nanaimo on July 7.
Officers are confident the female driver and the other male suspect will be identified, and the investigation continues.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.
