Nanaimo’s youths who might be considering a career with the RCMP can find out if they have the right stuff at the RCMP’s Central Vancouver Island Youth Camp.
Nanaimo RCMP will host the five-day camp, July 8-12, at Nanaimo District Secondary School, 355 Wakesiah Ave., and registration is now underway.
The camp is for Grade 11 and 12 students who will take part in self-defence, team building, tactical training and scenario-based training activities to give participants a taste of what police work involves and let them find out first-hand if they are interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement.
“The most important component of the week is fun,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, in a press release. “This will be reinforced from the minute they wake up to when their tired heads hit the pillow at the end of the day. From all accounts, previous attendees have had a blast finding out first hand if they have what it takes to be a Mountie.”
Up to 48 students will be selected from applications that must be submitted no later than April 5.
Applications are available at school guidance counsellor offices in Nanaimo, Port Alberni, Oceanside and North Cowichan school districts.
To learn more about costs and other information, contact a school counsellor or the Nanaimo RCMP School Liaison Unit at 250-754-2345.
