The city is ready to show residents its designs for its ‘complete streets’ project along Metral Drive.
The City of Nanaimo is holding an open house on the project Wednesday, Nov. 27, at Pleasant Valley Hall so that citizens review preliminary designs and provide feedback that the city says will inform next steps through the detailed design and construction phases.
According to the city website, staff identified projects of similar scope and proximity in the area and saw an opportunity to combine the work “to achieve economy of scale and a comprehensive product.” The municipality says the Metral Drive complete streets project “helps achieve the city’s goal to create and build a more sustainable, multi-model network that accommodates and moves people – not only motorists.”
The website says the concept designs ensure comfort, safety and effective mobility; improves safety for pedestrians, cyclists and transit users; enhances public amenities and connections along the corridor; and makes the streetscape “more inviting.”
A draft 2020-2024 financial plan overview noted that aspects of the project fall within the water infrastructure program, the transportation infrastructure program and the drainage infrastructure program. The city has budgeted $5.8 million for Metral Drive in 2020 and $5 million in 2021.
Pleasant Valley Hall is located at 6100 Doumont Rd. Residents can drop in anytime between 4:30-7 p.m. For more information, visit http://nanaimo.ca/goto/Metral.
